According to El Cronista, the Mexican government has confirmed a new phase in President Claudia Sheinbaum's housing policy with the launch of a program to build 100.000 social housing units, carried out by FOVISSSTE, the housing fund of the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (Fondo de la Vivienda del ISSSTE). The initiative forms part of the Housing for Wellbeing Program (Programa de Vivienda para el Bienestar) and represents FOVISSSTE's return to direct home construction after 34 years, according to the outlet.
The first project has already broken ground in the state of Puebla with the laying of the first stone for the "Carmen Serdán" housing complex, built on a plot recovered by the state government. Officials at the event said the development will include 512 units of approximately 60 square metres each, built to meet international adequate housing standards set by the United Nations. The units will be located in areas with access to basic services and urban infrastructure, the source reported.
Nationally, the pipeline covers 28 sites across 18 states, with a planned investment of 60.000 million pesos for the full 100.000-unit program to be delivered over the current six-year presidential term. Officials cited by El Cronista said each development will also include small SuperISSSTE shops and ISSSTE medical clinics for residents, alongside continued restructuring of existing mortgage loans under the fund.
The Puebla groundbreaking marks FOVISSSTE's first construction start since it shifted its operations decades ago to focus mainly on mortgage lending, according to the report.
