According to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, as cited by NetEase News, the city has issued its first 2026 batch of the affordable housing construction and acquisition plan. The batch covers 15 new construction or acquisition projects with more than 17.200 units, while 37 projects across ten districts, including Xicheng, Chaoyang and Haidian, are scheduled for completion with more than 42.000 units of housing stock.
Of the 15 new projects, six are what the source describes as "one room, one bed" rental housing schemes (a low-rent, small-format product aimed at single occupants), accounting for more than 3.500 units, while nine are relocation housing projects totalling 13.700 units. Within this batch, 14 construction projects covering 17.106 units are scheduled to break ground within the year, comprising 5 rental housing projects with 3.402 units and 9 relocation housing projects with 13.704 units, according to the commission.
On the completion side, the 37 projects due to finish in 2026 include more than 4.400 units of rental housing, more than 1.400 units of public rental housing, 34.000 units of relocation housing and about 1.800 units of shared-ownership housing, the commission stated. Officials at the commission said the shift this year moves the city's approach away from prioritising construction volume alone and toward liveability and better matching of housing types to demand, with small-format, low-rent, bed-based rental units named as the core focus of the new pipeline.
The commission added that it will continue to accelerate the pace of affordable housing supply and gradually adjust the housing mix to stabilise expectations and address local imbalances between housing supply and demand.
