According to Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the value of production of construction companies rose 2,7% in May compared with April, the largest monthly gain since December 2025. On an annual basis, output increased 7,5% versus May 2025, INEGI reported on Friday based on its National Survey of Construction Companies (ENEC).
The monthly reading was not only the strongest so far in 2026, it also exceeded the previous high mark of December 2025, when output grew 2,1%, INEGI said. The institute attributed May's advance to public sector works, an index that expanded 39,1% year on year, with the transport, electricity, telecommunications and oil segments contributing to the performance.
Employment in the sector also advanced. The number of construction workers increased 0,8% month on month and 0,3% year on year. Personnel directly employed by construction firms grew 0,9% monthly, while subcontracted staff fell 1,6% compared with April. Hours worked by personnel rose 0,5% monthly but slipped 0,1% on an annual basis, and hours logged by workers not directly hired by the firm fell 18,4%.
Real average wages increased 0,3% in May compared with April and were up 3,3% versus the same month of 2025, according to the ENEC data published by INEGI.
