According to Statistics Austria, construction costs for residential and settlement building in Austria stood 5,4% above the year-earlier level in June 2026, based on preliminary data. The cost index for this segment reached 105,8 points in June, unchanged in year-on-year growth terms from the reading a month earlier.
Infrastructure segments recorded steeper annual increases than housing. Road construction costs climbed 8,3% year-on-year to an index value of 108,5 points, the largest rise among the four categories tracked. Bridge construction costs rose 6% to 106,5 points, while water infrastructure construction increased 6,6% to 107,0 points.
Compared with May 2026, all four segments edged down. The residential index slipped 0,1% month-on-month, road construction fell 0,5%, bridge construction dropped 0,6% and water infrastructure declined 0,2%. The construction cost index captures the material, energy, transport, machinery and wage costs incurred by construction firms on ongoing domestic projects, as distinct from the construction price index that reflects prices actually billed to clients.
Statistics Austria labelled all June 2026 figures preliminary. On an annual basis, residential and settlement construction costs remain the smallest of the four year-on-year increases reported, with road construction posting the steepest rise at 8,3%.
