According to El Sureste, Quintana Roo has 44.200 housing units authorized or under construction, equivalent to 95% of the six-year target set for the state under the federal Vivienda del Bienestar (Housing for Wellbeing) program. The pipeline represents an investment of 40.800 million pesos.
The outlet reports that the state's overall target for new housing stands at 76.200 units, of which more than 57.000 are already committed, a progress rate above 70%. Officials cited by El Sureste said they expect the final count to exceed the committed figure. The update came as authorities in the Benito Juárez municipality, in Cancún, handed over keys to 250 housing units together with 457 debt settlement certificates and documents cancelling mortgages and issuing deeds for beneficiaries, in an event led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo as part of the Vivienda del Bienestar program.
Sheinbaum Pardo said the program's initial goal was to build 500.000 homes nationwide, a figure now raised to 1.800.000 units to be completed over the current six-year federal term. The Secretary of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu), Edna Vega Rangel, said the program has four components: construction of new housing for people earning between one and two minimum wages, credits and support for home improvement, delivery of legal certainty and property deeds, and settlement of unpayable loans previously held with Infonavit and Fovissste, the housing funds for private and public sector workers.
One beneficiary in Cancún, Inés Elizabeth Flores Cruz, speaking on behalf of recipients, said her application process had been fast and efficient, according to El Sureste.
