According to PorEsto, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirmed on 24 July 2026 that the federal Housing for Wellbeing programme aims to build 1,8 million homes over the course of her six-year term. Speaking at a housing handover event in Xoxocotla, Morelos, Sheinbaum said access to decent housing must be recognised as a right and not treated as a business.
By June 2026, 274.000 units were already under construction and a further 604.000 projects had been contracted or were ready to break ground, the president said. She presented the programme's three main components: restructuring of unpayable mortgage debt, regularisation of property titles, and the construction of the 1,8 million new homes. Sheinbaum thanked Morelos governor Margarita González Saravia and municipal authorities for supplying land and permits needed to develop the new housing units.
On the financing side, Sheinbaum said close to five million families would receive discounts, reductions of outstanding balances or full debt cancellation on loans held with Infonavit and the Fovissste housing fund for state workers. As an example, she cited a beneficiary who originally borrowed 422.000 pesos, had already repaid around 850.000 pesos over 19 years, and still owed more than one million pesos before her file was reviewed and the balance liquidated.
The president urged holders of older loans to check Infonavit or Fovissste offices and websites to confirm their updated balance and update their records. The second component of the programme, she noted, is aimed at issuing property titles to people who have already finished paying for their homes or who have lived for decades in unregularised settlements.
